Parable
by Richard Schnap

I remember a story
About a Roman emperor
Who gave up his throne
To work in his garden

I thought about when
I was reading a poster
Taped to a light pole
Announcing a protest

The next time I walked by
It had been torn down
And thrown in the gutter
As if it was trash

But I noticed a flower
In a crack of the sidewalk
Had somehow managed
To still stay alive
