History of us
by Sandy Green

It happened yesterday when
the sun curled around the beams
supporting the lattice,
when the bleeding heart flowers
bled,
flooding the lawn with
tiny droplets—

You pushed me away
and I was glad for the extra energy,
for goodness knows
the gas tank has long run dry
and I’m operating on fumes,
the tires are flat
the tread is smooth
the engine is knocking,
but don’t answer it.
