A Grackle on a Sunflower
by Andre John Narbonne
|
A grackle on a sunflower
is a misnomer
pecking summer
seeds—eyes that look out
worldlessly on wizened
frocks of sapped September
leaves. It
has no place,
no home beyond
the to-and-fro of grooming
with a beak of burnished gold. A
butterfly in a sun
storm is a vision
of salvation.
A grackle on a
sunflower is the past.
