How did you know
to question the art of falling,
measure the space between
air and earth,
to gauge the strength of tides
and undertows,
scope the surface of the moon
and invent the sigh
of knowing.
Your secular notions disturbed
divine heads of state
whose flaming tongues
chained you to solar beams
arrested in the twilight
of dark ages.
Who would have guessed
God gifted the universe
with whats and whys,
hows and whens
and laws that made no sense
so that we would not fall
into the great chasm of stars
before our time.
