Momentous

how long
did it take
the drop
collecting at the tip
of the cedar’s
branch
globe-like
in the gray
morning light
I watched
days went by
traffic hurried and became quiet
fads grew compelling and faded to
quaintness loves impassioned and regretted
salmon entered the sea and returned to their spawning streams
nations conquered and were conquered themselves
languages thrived and became archaic
presidents won and lost favor
apples ripened and fell
groundwater seeped
became a creek
and emptied
into the sea
I watched
and wrote this down
then looked back
and it was gone
