No Reason

i have been stepping carefully
around the giant hole
in the middle of my kitchen floor
you know, the pit without a bottom
that makes ominous rumblings from time to time
the one i have been pretending is not there
so we don't have to talk about it
(i think you
may have noticed
though)
i'm pretty sure it started with
bubbling
puckering
grinding
crunching
and a depression in the linoleum
i could try to say it happened
around the time i started drinking
or when my parents split
doesn't matter
there was a crack
that widened very slowly
and now sometimes bats come out
to cheerfully eat my fruit flies
i hope you don't mind because
i want to sit at the edge with you
and fling utensils into the abyss
for us
no reason
is reason
enough
