In México decent people don't
take off their shoes in public
or walk bare foot on grass.
But it was pouring,
water coursing down the cobblestone streets,
gushing rivers of Guanajuato's incline.
All I knew was I didn't want
two days wearing wet tennis shoes
so I pulled them off,
peeled the socks from my feet
and ran after Julie towards Casa Kloster.
Running under the cavernous hallways
where people huddled watching the rain
the rivers
my bare wet feet.
