At the Remembering 9/11 Exhibit (on a photograph by Eugene Richards)

this minimalist shot is composed
of two upright rectangular
planes side by side
reading from right to left
the awful simplicity of
a slab of yellowish air
a large dark bird
with wings outspread has
just crossed into this stark realm
leaving on the left
a skyscraper barely showing through
the ash blonde veil of ultrafine debris
as the faint outline of
a stepped roof and
rows of windows
at the building’s top left
an inverted pattern
of blanched stars and stripes
as if waiting
for a child’s crayons
fly bird fly
