America 2000
by Corey Mesler

I saw America utterly transformed,
maybe it was a vision,
maybe I was sleepwalking.
But there was a light, a light around
the heads of the heads
of state, nimbi, and they all appeared
as mild as lambs. Their
eyes twinkled with the possibilities
being born in their super-
brains -- they were so damned smart!
I saw America turned inside out
to show that it still shone like a cut
diamond when it wanted to.
It shone like a cut diamond and there
were people milling about
in the now roiling streets, the streets
alive like rivers, the people
buffeted about, but gently, the people
all congratulating themselves
on what they had achieved. And there
among them stood I.
I was an American, alive, aware and full
of piss and vinegar, a wine
as rich as blood. I was ready for the coming
coming. I was, oh, sanctified.
