Field Mouse
by Laura L. Snyder

A pail set
for morning wash
outside the trailer door
lured a mouse with a siren's call--

he thought he heard the sea.
I found him there,
while dew was heavy on the step,
face floating so well,

the long whiskers fanned
ahead of his beaded nose,
two translucent wings to carry him
safe across the river Styx.
